The county of Dorset is one filled with outstanding natural beauty. You can see rolling hills, craggy coastlines and soft and sandy beaches. Dorset is famous for its picturesque coastline which stretches from Lyme Regis in the west to Christchurch in the east. In Dorset you will find the popular holiday resorts of Bournemouth, Poole and Weymouth.

The coastline of Dorset was awarded World Heritage Status by UNESCO in 2001 for its unique geological history and for its landforms such as Lulworth Cove, the Isle of Portland and the shingle bank of Chesil Beach.

The county is charming because of its many lovely villages. One is Cerne Abbas which lies in the valley of the River Cerne. It is a very English village with a ruined abbey and the famous Cerne Abbas Giant carved into the chalk hillside above the village. It is the largest hill figure in Britain, standing 180 feet high. Another great village is Abbotsbury which has a number of tea rooms and pubs. They also have the world famous Abbotsbury Swannery and the Sub Tropical Gardens. There are also some villages that have strange names such as Ryme Intrinseca, Piddletrenthide and Affpuddle. They each have their own history, character and charm.

Water sports are very popular in the county as well. The best sailing in Europe is generally regarded to be had in the waters off of Weymouth and Portland. This is why this area was chosen to host all of the sailing events when London hosted the Olympic Games in 2012.

Those who enjoy dry land activities can enjoy walking, horse riding, fishing, golf, tennis, llama trekking, zorbing and much more. There is so much to do on a Dorset holiday.
