Gumber Farm is run by the National Trust and is situated on the 3,500 acre ewe-peppered Slindon Estate. Their campsite and bothy are a peaceful, remote getaway in the crowded South East of England.

The bothy is a converted 19th century flint barn in a large clearing within a large wood filled with deer. Its great facilities are available to campers. Right outside of the bothy is the small camping field. The paddock is there as well in which you may leave your mount.

The lovely farm is surrounded by the sensuous curves South Downs. Its beauty has been eulogised by none other than writer and historian Hilaire Belloc. It is ironic that a place of such beauty is mostly used as a brief stop-over by walkers and cyclists who are either attempting the South Downs Way or the Monarch's Way, both of which are nearby.

If guests were to stay longer at the estate they could visit Bronze Age burial mounds, a Neolithic flint knapping site or a section of the arrow-straight Stane Street which was built by the Romans to link London and Chischester. There is also a Victorian folly nearby. In World War II a dummy airfield was laid out there but it was only ever bombed once. Air raid shelters and other bits of fakery can still be seen there today.

Star gazers will enjoy the huge night sky untroubled by earthly lights. In the morning the sky is alive with swallows and sparrows that live in the eaves of the bothy.

Just 1½ miles away guests can visit Slindon Village which is a fine example of what many Sussex villages would have once looked like. You can see lovely flint and brick cottages and their famous pumpkin display. The village claims to be the birthplace of cricket.

Only 5 miles away Arundel Castle is located on a very pleasant hilltop location with 40 acres of grounds and gardens to explore. The city of Arundel showcases exquisite works of art, furniture, tapestries, china, sculpture, clocks and suits of armour.
