Gruinard Bay Caravan Park

Set in one of the most outstanding areas of natural beauty on Scotland's west coast, Gruinard Bay Caravan Park has holiday caravans for hire and pitches for touring caravans, motor homes and tents.

Gruinard Bay Caravan Park is situated on the beach front with level grassland. The park is surrounded by magnificent natural beauty.

They are a small, family-owned caravan and camping park. They take pride in their friendly style of service to their visitors. They believe that their hospitality is why so many guests return year after year.

Most of their holiday caravans and touring pitches overlook the beach, which is only 10 yards from the park. The site's camping pitches are in fenced bays which gives some privacy and protection. There are electric hook-ups available. There is a small charge for setting up your awning. All hot showers on the site are free.

Gruinard Bay Caravan Park has holiday caravans for hire. A majority of these are situated on the sea front. All caravans are self-contained and feature their own toilet and shower. The caravans are fully-equipped and include full-sized gas cookers, water heaters, refrigerators and gas fires. There is no extra charge for gas or electricity.

They do not provide televisions but they will supply an aerial if you want to bring your own portable set. The area has a rather erratic level of reception though and sometimes there is no reception at all. The site provides all bed linen and duvets but they do not provide towels for their guests.

Facilities include separate toilets and showers for men and women, washing-up sinks with hot water and a chemical toilet disposal point. Use of all of these facilities is free for their guests. There are electric hook-ups and water taps scattered throughout the park. They have a number of refuse collection areas.

There are spin dryers located in each of the shower units that are suitable for small loads, but they also have laundry facilities better suited for large loads for which a small charge is made. Guests can borrow hair dryers free of charge from the site when needed. The site does not have any special facilities for the disabled.

The local area is full of wildlife, much of which you can see right on the park. In the bay you can frequently see eider duck and northern divers and sometimes you can even catch a glimpse of the occasional otter or seal. Those with good binoculars or a telescope might even see dolphins or a whale further offshore.

You can go sea fishing from the beach, rocks or from your own boat. Examples of the kind of fish that you can catch include mackerel, cod, pollack, saith and haddock. The local lochs are well-stocked with trout and may be fished from for a modest daily fee. You can buy fishing permits from Gruinard Bay Caravan Park's shop.

Within the park or within easy travelling distance of the park guests can enjoy the water sports of sailing, water skiing, scuba diving and swimming.

There are golf courses in Gairloch and Ullapool for golf enthusiasts. There is pony trekking available at Flowerdale, near Gairloch.

Adjacent to the park are the ruins of the Chapel of Sand which are placed picturesquely by the shore. The Chapel of Sand is reputed to have been erected by St. Columba, or some of his followers, in the 8th century.

Guests will find the village of Slaggan lying in ruins at the end of a 2 mile track between Laide and Mellon Udrigle. When you visit these ruins you can let your imagination take you back to scenes of daily life in this remote settlement over 100 years ago. There is also an excellent sandy beach near the village ruins. You must take care if swimming here though, especially on an ebb tide.

When you stay at Gruinard Bay Caravan Park touring some of the most beautiful scenery in Scotland is within your grasp. There is an unlimited potential of walks available in the area. Those that are ambitious can tackle some of the Munros in the area. Some other attractions in the area include the Victoria Falls, the Ardessie Falls and the Corrieshalloch Gorge, all of which can all be quite lovely to see.
