OUT AND ABOUT

One of Britain's finest landscapes, The Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty covers 150 square miles of land and it includes wildlife-rich wetlands, ancient heaths, windswept shingle beaches and historic towns and villages. Along the coastal paths there are some lovely walks and cycle routes as well as many other footpaths and bridleways. Less than 7 miles away from the site you can sail on the River Alde.

ALDEBURGH: This is a pretty seaside town with bijou shopping, art galleries and restaurants that is only 5 ½ miles away from the site. It has a great Blue Flag shingle beach and fisherman huts that sell freshly caught fish daily.

ORFORD: This is a small town that is popular with visitors because of its castle, church, smokehouse and quayside. It is located just south of Aldeburgh. It was an important port and fishing village in the Middle Ages. The area's main geographical feature is Orford Ness which is a long, wide shingle spit at the mouth of the Ore. It is now a nature reserve run by the National Trust.

SNAPE: This is a small village that is known for the Maltings which are a set of 19th century buildings that were built on the banks of the River Alde for the malting of barley. These buildings have since been partially restored and converted into shops, galleries and a concert hall. Snape is near Aldeburgh and is only 6 miles away from the site.

THORPENESS: This is a small coastal village that is popular for its beach, amenities and sights. Visitors can see the "House in the Clouds", a boating mere and a challenging golf course. Thorpeness is just about 4 miles away from the site.

RSPB MINSMERE: This is great for serious bird watchers and those who simply enjoy the countryside. Visitors might catch a glimpse of the bittern or marsh harrier. It is less than 4 miles from the site.
