Rushbanks Farm

Rushbanks Farm is the only official site on the banks of The River Stour and it is very suitable for boaters and canoeists. They are a minimum facility site. They also welcome tents, caravans and campers.

They have separate men and women’s toilet on the site. They have an outdoor sink for washing dishes and a chemical disposal point for caravans.

Rushbanks Farm is a working farm and because of this dogs must be kept on a lead at all times when on the site. They are situated on the Suffolk Bank between Bures and Nayland on the Bures Road. If you are coming from Colchester take the A134 to Nayland. When at Nayland turn left. There should be a sign posted “Bures”. Follow the road for about 2 kms past a left hand sign posted “Wissington Church”. There is a group of cottages on the left and a sign to the campsite. Go through the gate and follow the farm track down to the waterslide. There are several landing stages and you will find that launching over the bank is easy.

They are a very quiet site that is run by the farmer Garth Bates who is a member of The River Stour Trust.

There is a public footpath that crosses the farm which creates possibilities of several different walks.

The River Stour is wide and deep and there is about a mile and a half of unobstructed water. You will find 2 step weir portages downstream that lead to the Anchor at Nayland. Upstream 2 more portages must be negotiated in order to reach Bures. This stretch of the river is the quietest and the most attractive section of the whole navigation.

During most weekends in the summer a resident camper will collect your fee. The site allows campfires only if there is a special arrangement made beforehand.
