OUT AND ABOUT
Melton Mowbray is a historic market town which is famous for its fabulous pork pies and stilton cheese. The local area has a selection of fine country pubs, walks and historical visitor attractions.

Just a short journey away from the town is splendid Belvoir Castle, home of the Duke and Duchess of Rutland. Belvoir is one of the finest examples of English castles in the country and has featured in many films.

Rutland Water, the largest man-made lake in England, is another local attraction. It’s an ideal location to get away from it all. Ideal for sailing, fishing and other water sports. The 24-mile perimeter walk/bike ride (bikes can be hired) is a challenge to anyone with bags of energy. The flooded church at Normanton has now been turned into a museum which describes the making of the lake in words, pictures and film.

Burrough Hill situated close to the village of Burrough-on-the-hill, was an iron age fort standing almost 700ft above sea level overlooking the Wreake Valley. One can see for miles on a clear day, and many footpaths pass by the hill fort.

St Mary’s Church Bottesford, has the highest spire (210ft) in Leicestershire. It contains the tomb of the 6th Earl of Belvoir with an inscription alleging that two of his sons died as a result of witchcraft. This led in 1619 to a “Trial of the Witches of Belvoir” after which two so called witches were put to death.
