Mumbles, The

The Mumbles is a peninsula with two islands at its head, on the outer of which there is a lighthouse that was established in 1794. The Mumbles, and Oystermouth, are now a popular resort with a pier (1898), Winter Gardens, and vestiges of the Mumbles railway which ran from Oystermouth to Mumbles Head (but was, alas, axed in 1960). Oystermouth Castle ruins date from the 13th and 14th centuries.

Swansea docks were established as early as 1306. In the 17th century, they were developed for the shipping of Welsh coal, copper, and iron ore. In World War II the city was severely bombed; the damage has been replaced by an impressive new centre – spacious and with abundant greenery. Places of interest include the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery and Museum, the Maritime and Industrial Museum and the University College Museum. To the west, lie the tourist pleasures of the Mumbles and the Gower Peninsula.
