From ancient wild forests to elegant sculptured gardens, Nottinghamshire has some of the most beautiful countryside in Britain. In the north, Sherwood’s dark, brooding oaks blanket the landscape. In the south, the Vale of Belvoir’s seemingly endless, undulating hills welcome you into the county. Come to Nottinghamshire and discover everything that lies in between for yourself.
In north Nottinghamshire you’ll find the Dukeries, an area named after the four ducal mansions built there in the 18th century. The Dukes and Duchesses are long gone, but the parks and gardens are thriving. The house at Clumber Park was demolished in the thirties, but the atmospheric Gothic Revival Chapel still stands. Take a leisurely wander past the serpentine lake and down Europe’s longest lime tree avenue – it’s sure to inspire a return visit.
And of course there’s always the story of Robin Hood, which strikes a chord with people all over the world. In Nottinghamshire you can uncover the legend's heart in Sherwood Forest, where the Major Oak, once thought to be Robin’s hideout within its hollow trunk, still stands at around 800 years old. A visit to Nottingham Castle and the Galleries of Justice Museum in the city provide more inspiration to follow in the legendary heroes footsteps, as the former home and prisons respectively of his enemy the Sheriff of Nottingham.
