Guisborough

This busy market town, a touring centre for the nearby Cleveland Hills, and North Yorkshire Moors, contains an architectural gem in the remains of a 12th-century priory. They include a gatehouse and dovecot, and the magnificent 14th-century east end of the building. The work of artists and craftsmen can be seen at the Chapel Beck gallery.

Miles of firm, sandy beaches stretch from here to the Tees estuary and the town has become a lively resort, with a wide range of leisure and entertainment facilities, including Coatham Amusement Park, the largest indoor funfair in the north east. There is also a well-known racecourse. The oldest lifeboat in the world, built in 1800, can be seen in the Zetland Museum on the Promenade.
