Between London and the sea lies the ancient Saxon County of Essex. As you travel west to east, the landscape in this vast county transforms from the historic woodlands of Epping and Hatfield, through rolling wheat-fields dotted with poppies and windmills, to the estuaries and coastal villages of the great North Sea, where you can relax and revive yourself.
The county boasts a strong maritime heritage; the 350 mile long coast, one of the longest of any English county, bears testament to our colourful heritage. Coastal towns such as Maldon, Burnham-on-Crouch, Wivenhoe and Brightlingsea all come to life in the summer with yachts, fishing and watersports. Along the estuaries and just inland from the fishing towns, the environment is wild and undisturbed and of great importance for nature conservation.
Well known seaside resorts along the east coast include Clacton, Frinton and Walton to the north of the county and Southend-on-Sea at the mouth of the river Thames, where emphasis is on traditional family entertainment.
Traces of medieval times can be found in delightful small towns such as Saffron Walden, Coggeshall and Thaxted. Medieval industries such as silk weaving and saffron growing created great wealth for the county which led to the construction of many beautiful houses and fine churches including, Audley End, Ingatestone Hall and Layer Marney Tower. Close to the European mainland, many different cultures and historical events have influenced Essex over the centuries. The Normans left their mark with castles at Colchester, Hedingham and Hadleigh, while the Romans made Colchester their capital.
Essex offers a rich tapestry of everything that makes Britain great. There is a wonderful collection of old and new, and Essex manages to combine modern facilities, heritage properties, beautiful green gardens and magnificent coastlines to create the perfect holiday destination - whatever your taste, age or budget.
