Local places of interest:
IMPERIAL WAR MUSEUM - DUXFORD
Set within the spacious grounds of the famous former First and Second World War airfield. It retains its wartime atmosphere and, as many of the aeroplanes still fly, you might even see one take to the air during your visit.
Hundreds of thousands of visitors come to Duxford annually to see over two hundred aircraft including biplanes, Spitfires and Gulf War jets as well as tanks, military vehicles and boats.
An original 1917 Belfast hangar hosting the Battle of Britain exhibition contrasts dramatically with the American Air Museum which is an outstanding example of contemporary British architecture. Duxford's unique collection of historic American combat aircraft include the B-17 Flying Fortress and the enormous B-52 bomber, with many suspended from the ceiling as if in flight.
RSPB FOWLMERE NATURE RESERVE
A short drive or a pleasant walk alongside open fields and past Manor Farm will take you to the reserve. There the reed-beds and pools are fed by natural chalk springs with a stream running through the reserve.
Special birds include kingfishers, water rails and nine species of warblers including sedge warblers, reed warblers and grasshopper warblers. Starlings, thrushes and buntings, including corn buntings, roost on the reserve in the winter. The nature trail is partly wheelchair and pushchair accessible, as are two of the three hides.
